The Area
Newcastle-under-Lyme grew up around a castle which was built in the 12th century, and was named Newcastle-under-Lyme due to its proximity to the Lyme forest. The town sits around 5 miles (8 km) west of Stoke-on-Trent, and 26 miles from Stafford. The borough has excellent road links, being served by the M6, the A34 and the new A50 link road, which gives North Staffordshire a first-class eastern access to the M1.
The borough boasts numerous activities and sites of interest for guests to explore. Set in the heart of the Potteries, home to Wedgwood and Royal Doulton, there's always a lot to see and do with a vast array of museums, factories and shops. Visitors can also enjoy the wide variety of historic buildings, which range from half-timbered, thatched cottages in outlying rural villages like Betley and Barlaston to impressive Georgian buildings in the main town of Newcastle-under-Lyme.
