Newcastle-under-Lyme has a proud history that can be traced back nearly one thousand years and takes its name from a ‘new castle’ built by the Normans in the 12th century under the forest of Lyme. In the 17th and 18th century the market town flourished manufacturing hats. Later Newcastle’s economy became based around pottery and coal mining and. like neighbouring Stoke on Trent, the town formed part of the area known as ‘The Potteries’.
A vivid and colourful reminder of the borough’s past is the bustling market, open six days a week, which dates back to 1173 and helped found Newcastle’s prosperity. Even more colourful are the spectacular floral displays which have helped Newcastle win regional and national awards in the “Britain in Bloom” competition.
Just outside the town centre is the New Vic, the first purpose-built ‘theatre in the round’ in Europe, which offers a wide range of entertainment, including classic and modern plays and outstanding concert performances.
The Newcastle Borough Museum & Art Gallery illustrates over 800 years of the Borough’s history and includes a life-size Victorian street scene. Local and national artists are featured in the Art Gallery, along with travelling shows.
Visitors can also enjoy the wide variety of historic buildings, which range from half-timbered, thatched cottages in outlying rural villages like Betley and Barlaston to impressive Georgian buildings in the main town of Newcastle-under-Lyme.
The Ramada Newcastle is one of the best located hotels near Alton Towers theme park. The world-famous theme park is just a short drive from the hotel featuring gravity-defying rides such as ‘Oblivion’ and ‘Nemesis’, coupled with magnificent gardens.
Trentham Estate is also nearby offering an exciting day out. There’s a unique collection of shops in the Shopping Village and England’s largest Garden restoration project, as well as Boat Trips on the lake, outdoor events and a fantastic Monkey Forest.
